Empathy Funding is a community funding feature that gives family and friends the ability to make payments to a loved one's account. In order to use Empathy Funding, you must have credit card processing enabled. Contact us if you need more information and we will put you in touch with our credit card processing partner.
If you are configured with credit card processing Administrator level users will have a link to control the overall Empathy Funding settings and Web Payment Portal Settings at Admin > Financial Maintenance > Payment Portal Settings. (See the Payment Portal Settings article for details on web payments.)
Overall Settings
This information is YOUR email address and optional text number that should receive payment notifications when someone makes a donation or payment.
The Enabled/Disabled Toggle controls if Empathy Funding websites are available for your families. This setting must be enabled in order to see the each decedent's customization section for their Empathy Funding page and for ANYONE to access an Empathy Funding page via the World Wide Web. You can control the visibility of each individual decedent's Empathy Funding page on their Case Overview screen (detailed below). NOTE: If the Enabled/Disabled toggle is set to disabled, NO Empathy Funding pages will be accessible. Please make sure you do not have any active Empathy Funding pages before you switch from Enabled to Disabled.
You may add your own receipt message or use the default message as described on the screen.
Empathy Funding Web Page Configuration
If Empathy Funding is enabled for your funeral home or crematory each decedent will have an Empathy Funding configuration setting section on their Cases Overview page. This section is where you handle all the customization for the funding page.
There are various configuration settings that control if the Empathy Funding page is accessible by the public. If the site is not accessible for any reason, such as disabled or fully funded, the site visitor will be shown a page indicating that funding is not currently enabled or funding is complete and donations can not be accepted.
The funding page for the decedent will not be available until and unless all the required authorization data has been entered. If funding is not possible, the reason funding is not enabled will show on this page. Examples are missing an authorizer, outside the entered funding date range, paid in full, etc..
The Empathy Funding Accessible toggle- that is the overall control of the page. If it is set to Not Accessible the funding site will not be available regardless of any other date range or funding goal values.
Authorized By - You must enter who has authorized the activation of the Empathy Funding page and their relationship to the decedent. Since the page is public-facing it is highly suggested that you first receive authorization from the next of kin, buyer or other family member.
Authorized Date Range - You must enter a date the the Empathy Funding page will first be available. You may optionally set an end date if you want the ability to donate to end before the account is paid in full.
Funding Goal (optional) - The funding goal will default to the contract total. You do not need to enter a value here unless the family does not want to fund the entire contract.
The Total Currently Paid includes ALL payments made - made by the family, insurance and Empathy Funding, etc.. Regardless of the authorization settings additional donations will not be allowed once the account has been paid in full.
The next section controls the look of the decedent's Empathy Funding page. Most settings are self-explanatory. The obituary photo and text shown on the Empathy Funding page are the photo and text entered via the Obituary screen for the decedent.
The Date Display will default to the date of birth and date of death entered on the Biography screen. You may override it or check the box to not show the dates on the funding page.
The last section shows the unique page link for the decedent's Empathy Funding page. You can copy the url to your clipboard so you can quickly and correctly paste it wherever you need.
The Visit Page link will open the funding page in a new browser tab. This is useful when you are configuring the page with the family. You can make adjustments to the colors, messages, etc in Halcyon then re-visit and refresh the Empathy Funding page. This will allow the family to preview and "sign off" on the page layout.
Empathy Funding Donations
Below is an example of an Empathy Funding page. Friends and family may click the Contribute button to make a donation. Prior donors and their contributed amounts will show only if the family has selected to show the contributions.
Note that if you sum up the total contributions shown on the site it may not equal the amount that is shown as the amount funded. In the example shown, if you totaled up all the donations shown they may not equal $156.77. This is because the funded total includes all payments applied to the open balance and not just the total amount donated via Empathy Funding.

When the Contribute button is clicked, the following screen will appear.
If the amount entered would result in an over-payment of the account the donor will receive a message requesting that they decrease their donation. (Remember that if the account has been fully paid the Empathy Funding page will not accept additional donations.)
The donor will have the option to include a message to the family. This message will not appear on the Empathy Funding page, but will appear in the email the family receives notifying them that a contribution was made. In addition to the family notification, the donor will receive a receipt and your location will receive a notification sent to the email and/or text number(s) you previously set up in the Admin > Financial Maintenance > Payment Portal Settings.
